Trust those who believe in you

I hope you enjoyed the holidays and are now ready and fired up for the new year which is full of possibilities waiting for you to take action.

I would like to share with you this heartfelt piece about why most people seem not to trust those who believe in them.

How many times has someone passed a wonderful compliment to you for something you do very well or for a skill that you possess that impresses them. Look back and think about this for a moment. Then consider how much confidence you feel about that skill. Many times, people still go around lacking confidence even though they receive numerous positive feedback from those around them. Even if someone has told them they are the best at something, they still push on like they are just like the rest.

Let me share my own experience with this…….

A few years ago I was a member of a Toastmsters club in my hometown of Harare. For my first speech the toastmasters club asked me to prepare a speech known as the Ice Breaker. It is basically about introducing yourself to your peers, providing a benchmark for your current skill level, and standing and speaking without falling over. A bit nervous and stammering I basically fumbled through the speech and in six long minutes I was done. A senior toastmaster, who was an executive in a broadcasting company was the first one to give me feedback and he commented that I had a good radio voice. The gentleman’s name was Munyaradzi Chimwara. He was an executive at a radio station, an expert in this field and he was giving me such positive feedback. Guess what, I was indeed flattered but truly I did not believe him. Me, radio voice, noway. That was the chatter in my head. Now, a few years later, when I look back to this moment I always kick myself and wonder why I never believed him and explored the broadcasting world and instead settled for a less creative job in the world of finance. I know I loved the idea but I just could not believe I had the ability, let alone the voice.

In another incident, my business partner, Blessing, read an article that I had written when I began blogging. I had shared with him the article to get his opinion and let me know what he thought about it. He is a trusted a friend and after he read the article he wrote back to me and said he was so impressed with my writing that he thought I should consider writing a book. He was that impressed by my writing style and ability. In the same manner as I felt about Munyaradzi’s comments I just didn’t quite believe him. Well, yeah I was writing a bit but a book was quite a long shot and what would I write about after all, who would even read it. For many years I proceeded with life normally never actually exploring the idea of expanding my writing. I just thought I was not good enough, despite evidence on the contrary and despite feedback from my own trusted friend.

The truth is I shortchanged myself for a long time and over the years Munyaradzi’s comments and Blessing’s comments about my writing have stayed with me and they have haunted me until I really got fed up and decided to do something about it. My first step was to simply trust that these guys were being truthful about their comments and that I better believe them. Once I was done with that I started on a writing project. I had not trusted these guys, I had not believed them. I didn’t trust their positive comments about my abilities but I was wiling to make a change. That’s how started to develop this blog. Though I went about struggling to come up with articles I did not stop and I’m still on it. Sometimes I would write articles but not have enough confidence to publish them. I turned down writing and speaking opportunities. I even experimented with a podcast but when I heard my own voice I was really terrified and backed away from that project, I didn’t think it was a radio voice though an expert had told me this.

All this happened to me despite the positive affirmations from important people. I wasted time, missed opportunities, and delayed my greatness. Thank God I have now come to my senses. My book is underway and is on track for release by January 2017. I have an inspirational message airing on radio daily and I know I have only just scrapped he surface. I am a certified John Maxwell leadership trainer and coach and I am developing my skills in the speaking, writing and podcasting fields. This website, the Well of Inspiration is my outlet for sharing my message with the world, for channeling my greatness in the fields of life strategies, leadership and risk management.

My challenge to you: What good comments have you heard about yourself lately, from those around you??? How do they make you feel??? Do you trust these people and what they are saying about you. I encourage you to trust everyone who says something positive about you and be skeptical about your critics. Work to develop that skill people comment positively about you , nurture it by taking intentional actions. It could easily be your future business, your contribution to society or to your family. It could be the harbor of your personal treasure.

Trust those who believe in you and Ignore your critics…

This will pave the way for you to realise your greatness and to achieve that epic and fulfilling life that you so much desire.

Whatever you are good at; that could be the seed for your greatness. Like a skilled farmer, put the seed in the ground, water it, add manure, keep the weeds away, add some fertilizer; surround yourself with all the tools and resources you need and allow your true greatness to sprout and bloom and nourish the world in a way that only you can do.

As for me, the last chapter to my life has not been written yet. My progress was stalled when I did not trust those who believed in me but thank God I still have a chance and I’m going for it both in podcasting and writing. and I’m confident my book will be a number one bestseller on Amazon Kindle. I really believe this
